The story

The series follows the "untold" story of Leonardo Da Vinci: the genius during his early years in Renaissance Florence. As a 25-year old artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time as he begins to not only see the future, but invent it.

What it’s like

Warm candlelit interiors gutter against cold stone, and Florence's rooftops, piazzas and hilltop castles are shot in saturated golden daylight that gives way to murky, shadowed night scenes. The palette leans on ochre, deep red and dusty blue, with sweeping camera moves, rapid cutting during duels and a restless handheld energy whenever Leonardo's inventions are unveiled. Music is a bombastic orchestral and choral score, often pushed forward in the mix, so the sound feels grand and a little theatrical. The vibe is swashbuckling and bright with a dash of mystery, suited to a lively weekend binge, a sword-and-intrigue marathon or a comfort rewatch with friends. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with a serialized plot of conspiracies, secret societies and occult hints running under each hour. Tone is playful, romantic and heroic, following a charming young inventor who is brash, idealistic and slowly learning to trust the people around him. Violence is regular and stylised, with frequent sword fights, stabbings and some bloody injuries, and there is sexual content and nudity, plus some sinister, supernatural menace. It is made for viewers who enjoy costume adventure, romance and clever gadgets rather than strict historical realism.
