The story

The story of the Medici family of Florence, their ascent from simple merchants to power brokers sparking an economic and cultural revolution. Along the way, they also accrue a long list of powerful enemies.

What it’s like

Warm candlelit interiors alternate with sun-bleached Tuscan piazzas, the terracotta and ochre of Florence bathed in hard afternoon light, while banquet halls glow amber and night scenes fall into deep brown shadow. The camera moves with purpose through crowded markets and marble-floored palazzo rooms, lingering on hands counting coin, ledgers, and whispered conspiracies in corridors. Score is orchestral and insistent, with lute and strings in the quieter scenes. The vibe is stately and scheming, a mix of period grandeur and quiet calculation, best suited to an evening settled in with a glass of wine or a long weekend rewatch. The pace is steady and plot-driven, with dinner-table confrontations, bargains struck in private, and sudden bursts of street violence. Violence is present and sometimes brutal, including stabbings and executions shown on screen, along with some sexual content and political cruelty, though gore is not extreme. Relationships are tense and loyalties shift, and the arc of a family climbing from merchant success to dangerous power unfolds over many episodes. It suits viewers who enjoy historical political drama with rich costume and set detail, and who don't mind intrigue and violence woven through it.
