The story

Set in a world of greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, this lavish drama series follows explorer Marco Polo's adventures in the 13th century.

What it’s like

Sweeping wide shots of steppe grassland, snowcapped mountains and walled cities give this series a big, saturated scale, with gold silks, lacquered palace interiors and candlelit courtly rooms set against desert-bleached daylight. Battle sequences and training montages run fast and kinetic, while quieter scenes lean on long dialogue exchanges framed in rich, theatrical compositions. The score mixes sweeping orchestral swells with traditional instruments, so the sound feels grand and a little ceremonial. The tone is lavish, intrigue-heavy and often sensual, moving between palace politics and bursts of action, with a young outsider slowly learning to navigate a court full of rivals. Violence is frequent and sometimes graphic, including executions and combat wounds, and sexual content and nudity appear regularly. Best suited to viewers who want a sumptuous historical epic for a weekend binge, rather than anything gentle or low-stakes.
