The story
During the period of martial law in 1960s Taiwan, some teachers and students from Cui Hua High School were arrested for possessing banned books. A female student fell to her death and rumors spread of a ghost haunting the campus. Thirty years later, the draconian culture of the school remains unchanged as a new transfer student uncovers the dark secrets behind the school’s haunting.
What it’s like
Rain-streaked windows, flickering fluorescent tubes, and corridors of damp concrete and peeling green paint give this series a sickly, claustrophobic look, with much of the frame sunk in murky shadow and sudden pools of pale light. Its sound design leans on dripping water, creaking doors, distant bells, and long stretches of unnerving quiet broken by sharp stings. The vibe is oppressive, eerie, and gradually unsettling, closer to slow dread than to constant chaos, and it suits a late night alone with the lights off or a rainy evening when you want to feel uneasy. Its pacing builds steadily through mysteries and interrogations, and its emotional core is fear, guilt, and the lingering damage of authoritarian control, with characters who are pulled between complicity and courage. Expect frequent scares, bloody and grotesque imagery, a death, and some brutal violence by authority figures, all of it fairly intense and not gentle. It is for viewers who want atmospheric folk-tinged horror with a historical undercurrent, and who can handle graphic moments in exchange for an immersive, haunting mood.
