The story

In the 1960s, two classmates go looking for their missing friends and teachers, all of whom took part in an illegal book club, only to come face to face with ghosts and deformed monsters that have taken over their school.

What it’s like

Murky, rain-soaked greens and sickly fluorescent light define this film, with long stretches of dim corridors, flickering lamps and shadowed classrooms framed in tight, unsettling compositions. Its palette leans on washed-out teal and rust, and the camera often lingers in stairwells and empty halls with a watchful stillness that makes every corner feel occupied. The score is sparse, built from low drones, distant bells and sudden stings, so silence itself carries much of the dread. Set in a 1960s Taiwanese high school under martial law, it moves with a slow, deliberate build and then lurches into jarring confrontations with ghostly figures and grotesque creatures. Its tone is paranoid and mournful, a claustrophobic mix of horror and political grief, with a teacher-student bond fraying under fear and betrayal. Violence is sudden and bloody, with gore and frightening creature imagery, and the overall experience is intense and unsettling. It suits viewers who want atmospheric, historically rooted horror and a psychological thriller that is heavy, not playful.
