The story
Get a hefty dose of Diablo with the Diablo Battle Chest. This collection contains Diablo II, the Diablo II: Lord of Destruction expansion set, the original Diablo, as well as an expanded strategy guide from BradyGames covering both Diablo II and the Lord of Destruction expansion set. With each game, you'll enter a dark fantasy world of monsters, spells, and unique characters. This Diablo collection takes you on a journey to the heart of evil.
What it’s like
Dark, gothic and claustrophobic: isometric dungeons of crumbling stone, torchlight pooling around the hero, and the flicker of spell effects bleeding color into near-black corridors. Fog of war creeps over the maps as you clear them, and the palette runs to bruised purples, sickly greens and the orange glow of fire and blood. Sound does much of the work here, with ominous ambient drones and eerie choral textures in the cathedrals and caves, punctuated by the crunch of combat and the grunts and clatter of monsters. Pacing is a steady loot-driven rhythm: short bursts of frantic clicking through crowds of demons, then quiet walks back to town to sort inventory and talk to strange NPCs. The mood is grim and atmospheric rather than gruesome, with cartoonish-but-unsettling creature design, blood splatter and frequent skeletal and demonic violence throughout, but no gore beyond fantasy-game norms. Best suited to late-night sessions alone, to players who love dungeon crawling, character builds and the satisfaction of a long run of gear upgrades, and to anyone wanting a dark-fantasy world to sink into over many hours.
