The story

Severance: Blade of Darkness follows the fate of four characters and their quest to defeat an evil Necromancer and retrieve a legendary sword. The player can choose between the characters, who are a Knight, a Barbarian, A Dwarf and a Ranger/ Amazon type female character. All characters have different starting areas but eventually end up in the same levels. Yet, the sequence of the stages can be chosen as a world map in between the stages prompts you to decide where you want to go next, maybe look for help at the Dwarven Mines or go face the Orcs at their dwelling.

What it’s like

Gritty, low-resolution polygonal 3D of the early 2000s: murky browns, dim torchlit caves, grey snowfields and sickly green undead glow, with a fixed-ish third-person camera that makes every battle feel cramped and physical. Sound is heavy and percussive, with clanging steel, guttural orc grunts, rattling bones and wind over empty tundra, the score mostly low drones and war drums rather than melody. The vibe is bleak, brutal dark fantasy, best suited to a late-night session alone or a stretch of focused, slightly masochistic play. Combat is deliberate and punishing, with each character's weapon and fighting style (sword, axe, bow, staff-like momentum) changing how a fight feels in the hands, and a world map lets you choose the order of quests, so progress comes in measured, sometimes grinding bursts between hard boss encounters. Intensity is high: frequent bloody melee, dismemberment-style hits, undead and orc carnage and a generally grim, unsparing tone, with no romance or lightness to soften it. It is for players who want old-school, hardcore action RPG combat, atmospheric dread and a sense of a harsh world they must fight through.
