The story
Like its predecessor, Diablo II is an action role-playing game with dark fantasy and horror themes. The player controls a new hero attempting to stop the destruction unleashed by Diablo's return. The game's 4 acts feature a variety of locations and settings to explore and battle in, as well as an increased cast of characters to play as and interact with. Diablo II had become one of the most popular online games of all time. Major factors that contributed to Diablo II's success include what fans found to be addictive hack-and-slash gameplay and free access to Battle.net.
What it’s like
Dark, isometric dungeons lit by torchlight and the sickly glow of spell effects, with muddy browns, bruised purples and the orange flare of fire against stone. The camera sits high and fixed over a tilted landscape, so the world unrolls as a crowded map of crypts, forests and desert ruins, and the hero's gear visibly changes as loot piles up. Sound does much of the work: a low, brooding ambient drone, clanging steel, guttural monster cries and hollow bells that signal the cathedral-like dread of Hell's encroachment. The vibe is gothic and grinding, a cold, relentless hum of clearing rooms, chasing rare drops and watching numbers climb. Violence is constant and bloody but abstracted: skeletons and demons burst into gore and blood splatters, with frequent fear and jump-scare moments, though nothing sexual and little cruelty beyond the battlefield. Pacing is brisk in combat and loose between quests, with a long, steady rhythm that suits a late evening, a rainy weekend or a session with friends. It is made for players who love the loop of hack-and-slash, character builds and co-op runs, and who don't mind a stark, menacing atmosphere.
