The story
Doom II: Hell on Earth is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and released in 1994 as a sequel to the original Doom. The game continues the story, with players battling through Earth after it has been invaded by demonic forces. Gameplay remains similar to its predecessor, featuring fast-paced combat, maze-like levels, and an array of weapons, including the introduction of the powerful Super Shotgun. Doom II also adds new enemy types, such as the Arch-vile and the Mancubus, increasing the game's challenge. Initially released for MS-DOS, Doom II has since been ported to numerous platforms, becoming a cornerstone of the FPS genre.
What it’s like
Low-resolution sprite demons lunge out of brown-grey tech corridors, lit by harsh, flat overhead light that gives way to blood-red hellscapes, sickly green acid pools, and sudden sky-bright outdoor ledges. Its maze-like layouts are dim and cramped, with the frantic flash of muzzle fire and the crunch of shotgun blasts. The soundtrack is a driving, distorted MIDI metal score, interrupted by demonic shrieks, the chug of chainsaws, and the hiss of steam vents. The vibe is relentless, grimy and adrenaline-hot, best suited to a late-night session or a retro afternoon when you want to be constantly moving. Pacing is fast and unforgiving, built around clearing rooms, backtracking through hidden switches, and managing ammo under pressure. Intensity is high: frequent gory violence, bodies bursting into gibs, and jump-scare ambushes, with no sexual content and little emotional interiority beyond grim determination. It is for players who love arcade-speed combat, old-school level design, and the raw, unapologetic chaos of early first-person shooters.
