The story

Zitat Klappentext: Eine mordsmäßige Detektiv-Gespenster-Horror-Kriminal-Zeitreisen-Romanzen-Musikkomödien-Geschichte von Douglas Adams, dem Autor des Bestsellers »Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis«.

What it’s like

Brisk, digressive comic prose with a dry, deadpan British voice, the narrator forever wandering off on tangents and circling back with a grin. The world is ordinary English settings, offices, a shabby London flat, country roads and odd rooms, all made slightly strange by a creeping sense that the rules of the universe are not quite holding. Think sly absurdity rather than atmosphere: the mood is brisk and playful, a little eerie at the edges, with ghosts, time slips and a stubbornly interconnected plot that the reader is happy to follow without fully trying to solve. The emotional register is warm and bemused, with loose, rambling arcs about odd, lonely people who drift into each other's lives. Violence and deaths occur, but they are brief and mostly offhand, played for comedy rather than gore, with some mild sexual innuendo and no sustained cruelty. It suits a lazy afternoon, a long train journey, or a reader who enjoys wit that sounds unhurried but keeps moving. It is for readers who like comic fiction with a strange, speculative undertow and who don't mind the story wandering.
