The story

Set in a ruined medieval city called Dreamland, Disenchantment follows the grubby adventures of a hard-drinking princess, her feisty elf companion and her personal demon.

What it’s like

Bright, hand-drawn 2D animation with flat, saturated colors, thick clean outlines and a gently warped Groening-style cartoon look, set in a cheerfully grubby medieval kingdom of crooked castles, muddy taverns and rolling green fields under big cartoon skies. The palette leans on warm oranges, moss greens and deep purples for the dungeons and swamps, and the framing is mostly bouncy, simple two-shots and reaction close-ups rather than anything cinematic. The score is a playful orchestral-and-bagpipe mix with plenty of comic stings, and the sound design is full of squelches, clanks and cartoon boings. The vibe is irreverent and scruffy, with a warm, mildly chaotic energy: a lazy Saturday afternoon, background while doing chores, or a laugh-out-loud evening with friends. Pacing is quick and episodic, with jokes landing every few seconds and a loose, sarcastic tone. Its people are a booze-loving princess, a cynical elf and a sweet demon, whose slow, grudging bond becomes the heart beneath the mess. Intensity is mild to moderate cartoon violence, crude humor, drinking and innuendo, with no real gore and little that is frightening. It suits adult animation fans who enjoy irreverent, low-stakes fantasy with a soft emotional core.
