The story

A version of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, including the added content in Afternoon of Darkness, was released for Microsoft Windows via Steam on February 24, 2016, retitled as Disgaea PC. The initial release was panned by critics on launch due to its many bugs, which included persistent crashes, save file loss, and poor performance, even on high-end PCs. A patch was released soon afterwards that fixed many of the bugs. Another patch was released for the game later that added the four characters previously exclusive to Disgaea DS. Players who bought the game during the 2016 Steam Summer Sale would also earn free in-game cosmetic items for Valve’s first person shooter game Team Fortress 2.

What it’s like

Bright, hand-drawn anime sprites stand on a tilted isometric grid, set against inky, neon-tinged underworld backdrops that shift between gloomy purples and cheerfully lurid reds. Cutscenes play out as static portraits and speech bubbles, with exaggerated expressions and a steady flow of sight gags. The soundtrack is brassy, bouncy and synth-tinged, with an offbeat orchestral warmth that keeps the mood light even when the battlefield gets crowded. Turn-based combat moves at a deliberate, unhurried pace: each round is a small puzzle of positioning, lifting and hurling units, and long sessions unfold in satisfying, chunky increments. The vibe is cheerfully chaotic, a bit silly and very generous with its own absurdity. Violence is constant but cartoonish, with exploding enemies, comic-book damage numbers and no gore; the humour is bawdy and irreverent, with some suggestive jokes but nothing graphic. It suits an evening of low-pressure tinkering, a comfort replay, or a long session with a snack nearby. It is made for strategy players who enjoy grinding for a clever build and don't mind a story that never takes itself too seriously.
