The story
**A cute kitten disrupts Petey's plans in the third Dog Man book from worldwide bestselling author and artist Dav Pilkey.** He was the best of dogs... He was the worst of dogs... It was the age of invention... It was the season of surprise... It was the eve of supa sadness... It was the dawn of hope... Dog Man hasn't always been a paws-itive addition to the police force. While he can muzzle miscreants, he tends to leave a slick of slobber in his wake! This time, Petey the Cat's dragged in a tiny bit of trouble -- a double in the form of a kitten clone. Dog Man will have to work twice as hard to bust these furballs and remain top dog! Dav Pilkey's wildly popular Dog Man series appeals to readers of all ages and explores universally positive themes, including empathy, kindness, persistence, and the importance of being true to one's self.
What it’s like
Bright, loose cartoon art in clean panels, with thick outlines, flat primary colors, and big expressive faces that carry most of the comedy. The page layouts move fast, with speech bubbles stacked over quick cuts between scenes, so it reads in one easy rush. The tone is goofy and warm: a bumbling, good-hearted police dog and a scheming cat in a sunny city full of slapstick chases and silly stakes. Its gentle mischief suits a lazy Saturday morning, a child's bedtime reading, or a quick read on a train. Violence stays cartoonish and bloodless, mostly slapstick tumbles and comic villainy, with no real menace or frightening scenes. The emotional register is light and affectionate, with the main hero learning to be patient and kind as he tries to do right by others. It is for early readers, families reading together, and adults who want something cheerful, quick, and unpretentious.
