The story
Aspiring super-villain Dr. Horrible wants to join the Evil League of Evil and win the girl of his dreams, but his nemesis, Captain Hammer, stops him at every turn.
What it’s like
Bright, bouncy, and cheerfully grubby: a short-form musical shot on a handheld digital camera in cramped apartments, a laundromat, and a flat suburban street, with a lot of tight close-ups and quick cuts that feel like someone filming themselves on a webcam. The palette is cool and fluorescent, with blue-grey lab light, sickly green villain-lair glow, and sun-washed daytime sets, and the score is quick, witty pop-theatre with a synth-pop bounce and sharp rhymes that land a joke per line. It's a sweet, self-mocking, low-stakes mood: funny and a little lonely, with a mild sense of bravado failing gracefully. Intensity is light: cartoonish mock-violence, a few mild threats and a death-ray gag, no gore and no sexual content. Each of its three short acts runs about fifteen minutes, so it suits a lazy evening, a late-night binge, or a quick laugh on a commute. The romance and the rivalry carry the emotional weight, with a lovelorn, self-deluded underdog slowly learning that being a hero or villain is mostly a matter of choice. It is for people who want clever musical comedy with a bruised heart and no real menace.
