The story
What it’s like
Told through diary entries, letters, ship's logs and newspaper clippings, this gothic novel reads like a stack of found documents, so the prose shifts with each narrator: clipped and methodical in one passage, breathless and fevered in the next. Its settings are rich and sensory: the wind-lashed Yorkshire coast with fog rolling over the headlands, a crumbling Carpathian castle lit by guttering candles, and a smoky, gaslit London where the streets feel crowded and unsafe. The mood is slow-building dread rather than constant action, with long stretches of quiet domestic routine broken by sudden alarm. The violence is grim and occasionally graphic, with blood, attacks on the living and staking of the undead, but it is brief and not lingered on, and the sexual menace is suggested rather than shown. A lonely, late-night read with a rainy-evening atmosphere, it suits readers who enjoy atmospheric, Victorian-flavoured horror, a patient pace, and a cast of earnest friends uniting against an ancient threat.
