The story
Ten thousand years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen establish the fabled sect and female order that would become known as the Bene Gesserit to control the future of humankind.
What it’s like
Vast desert and stone-cold interiors shot in hazy, ochre-and-bruise light, with the sun often hanging low and oversized behind rippling dunes and monolithic architecture. Its palette leans toward sand, rust, dusk violet and the occasional sharp flash of blue or red, and the framing favors wide, scale-heavy compositions that make people look small against the built and natural world. Interiors are candlelit or cold and shadowed, with a sense of ritual weight in every corridor. The score is a low, swelling drone with slow percussive pulses, pushed back into near-silence during quiet scenes, so the wind and the hush of rooms carry as much as the music. Its vibe is solemn, political and quietly ominous, the mood of a grand historical epic told in whispers. The pace is deliberate, with long conversations, cold calculation and slow-building intrigue rather than constant motion. Violence is present and sometimes sudden and bloody, including battle and execution scenes, though it is not constant and the gore stays in the background of the larger drama. Sexual content is limited and not central. The emotional register is austere and fraught, following a pair of sisters whose bond fractures under ambition and sacrifice. It suits a weekend binge for fans of cerebral, world-building sci-fi who enjoy patient, imposing spectacle.
