The story

The Fafnir Knight is the second game in the Untold series which are to be remakes of the original Etrian Odyssey games. The games are first person RPG dungeon crawlers where you create a map of the labyrinth as you explore and complete quests. The game features two game modes. The story mode, has a pre-made party with a more in-depth story that has voice acting and animated cutscenes, and a classic mode, customize a party of 5 to explore the Yggdrasil labyrinth. The game also has some DLC that was free the first week of it's release for those who had the game the first month. The DLC is available in individual parts for $1-$3 dollars. It costs a total of $23 US or $30 Canadian for all the DLC.

What it’s like

Hand-drawn anime portraits sit over a dim, schematic labyrinth, and the 3DS's stereoscopic depth lends the stone corridors a faint, layered quality when the top screen is on. The palette runs to deep blues, ochre torchlight and clean white UI panels, with first-person dungeon views that cut in sharp, static frames and a sparse orchestral score that swells during fights and then drops back to ambient hum. Movement is grid-based and deliberate: each step is a small decision, and mapping the labyrinth by hand on the touchscreen becomes its own quiet, absorbing rhythm. Story mode adds voiced dialogue and animated cutscenes around a fixed party, while classic mode lets you assemble five characters and let the maps fill in slowly over long sessions. The tone is earnest and warm rather than grim, with a camaraderie that builds through repeated expeditions. Violence is cartoonish turn-based combat with bursts of colourful damage numbers and no gore; fear is minimal and cruelty is absent. It suits a cold evening with the handheld on the desk, a patient session of drawing maps, or anyone who wants a thoughtful, low-stress dungeon crawl for players who enjoy methodical exploration and tidy spreadsheet-like party building.
