The story

Fallout: London is an ambitious, trail-blazing DLC-sized mod for Fallout 4, Bethesda Game Studios’ 2015 post-apocalyptic RPG. Fallout: London stands apart from its contemporaries and offers an entirely new experience: setting a Fallout game outside of the United States. True to its moniker, Fallout: London takes place IN London. From stuffy parliamentary aristocrats to a resurrection of the Knights of the Round Table to an uncompromising cult of revolutionaries (and more!), Fallout: London embodies the history and aesthetics of London and puts an unmistakably nuclear spin on the beloved city. Fallout: London’s development is labor-intensive and involves a plethora of eclectic cross-discipline individuals, both at amateur and industry level. The team maintains a strong sense of professionalism and devotion to the craft. Everyone on the Fallout: London team shares a deep love of videogames, and most importantly, Fallout itself. Each member of the Fallout: London team is individually recruited for their contributions and talent in the realms of game design and modding.

What it’s like

Grey, drizzled Thames light over ruined Westminster, with the Fallout wasteland's washed-out greens and rust browns giving way to London's sooty brick, wrought iron and tiled Underground stations, all swept up in the retro-futuristic clutter of 1950s-style Britain. The soundscape leans on the familiar Fallout radio crackle and period dance-hall tunes, broken by distant rumbling and the hum of nuclear-age machinery. Its vibe is wry, melancholic and quietly absurd, a little like a rain-soaked Sunday spent wandering a museum that never closed. Pacing is open and unhurried: long walks between rundown districts, detours into odd factions and side quests, and moments of sudden, sharp combat that break the stroll. Emotionally it sits between nostalgia and bleak humour, with characters who range from pompous to fanatical to sincerely lost, and arcs built around loyalty, ideology and survival. Violence is frequent and cartoonishly gory, with gunfights and melee strikes that land hard but never linger on cruelty. Mild profanity and dark jokes appear throughout. It suits players who love deep first-person role-playing, a sense of place, and the peculiar charm of seeing a familiar city bent into an alternate apocalypse.
