The story

A young girl who loves fancy things helps her family to be fancy for one special night.

What it’s like

Bright, airy picture-book pages with a loose, sunny palette of pinks, lavender and gold, and small spare illustrations that let plenty of white paper breathe around each line of text. The voice is chatty and exuberant, full of a little girl's delighted vocabulary, and the sensory world is domestic and playful: closets full of sparkly dresses, feather boas, a bedroom dressed up for company, a family dinner made into an occasion. The rhythm is quick and light, built for reading aloud with pauses for showing off the pictures, and the mood is warm, silly and affectionate with no tension to speak of. Nothing frightening, violent or cruel happens; the only stakes are whether a few clothes and decorations come out just right. It suits a bedtime read, a cozy afternoon with a young child, or a gentle reminder that loving something unusual is fine. It is for parents and early readers who want something cheerful, creative and low-key, and for adults who enjoy a bit of harmless, glittery whimsy.
