The story
Fate/Hollow Ataraxia is a Japanese visual novel game and the sequel to Fate/Stay Night. The word ataraxia in the title is a Greek term for tranquility, giving the title the combined meaning of "empty (or false) tranquility". The plot of Fate/Hollow Ataraxia is based half a year after the events of Fate/Stay Night. Like its preceding counterpart, the story is set in Fuyuki City. Bazett Fraga McRemitz, a member of the Mages' Association and a master in the Fifth Holy Grail War, wakes on the fourth day of the Fifth Holy Grail War with a new servant, Avenger, and no memory of what happened to her beforehand. She and the Avenger set off to fight and win the Holy Grail War.
What it’s like
Still-frame anime art over moody backdrops of a rain-slicked, half-lit Fuyuki City, with cool blues, violet night skies and sudden blooms of magical red and gold when a spell lands. The sound is mostly restrained: a piano or string motif that swells during tense exchanges, long quiet stretches of ambient city hum, and the occasional sharp sting for a reveal. Reading is the activity, text advancing at your own pace, so the rhythm is deliberate and conversational, broken by choice points and fight sequences that turn the screen harsh and kinetic. Its mood is melancholic and tense, a slow-burn unease that keeps circling a cold, sad truth about its heroine's past. Violence is frequent and sometimes graphic: swordplay, blood, and deaths that land heavily, though not gratuitously drawn. Some versions include explicit sexual content, which is not part of the standard experience. The arc follows a woman rebuilding a sense of self from fragments, and the pacing favours dread and introspection over action. For readers who like dark fantasy, character-driven mystery, and a story that rewards patient attention on a late, quiet night.
