The story
A chronicle of a decades-long volatile romance between two men — from their first meeting during the height of the 1950s Lavender Scare to the AIDS crises of the 1980s.
What it’s like
Warm amber and cool blue interiors give way to sun-washed Washington streets, with period detail carried in wood-panelled offices, smoke-hazed bars, and the bright chrome of 1960s cars. The camera tends to hold on faces in close, unhurried framing, letting glances and silences do much of the work, while the score leans on soft strings and piano that swell under the emotional peaks. Its vibe is melancholy and ardent, a slow burn of longing shadowed by fear and political dread. The tone is romantic but never sentimental: the story moves across decades in leaps, so long stretches of quiet intimacy are punctuated by sudden turns. Its central figures are two men whose bond endures through betrayal, distance and marriage, and whose choices grow heavier as the years pass. Intensity is moderate: there is explicit sexual content and some frank nudity, bouts of raw conflict and emotional cruelty, and a few harrowing scenes touching on illness and death in the AIDS-era episodes, though violence is limited and mostly not graphic. It suits viewers who want a deeply felt, adult love story rooted in history, with a thoughtful pace and a bittersweet, lingering ache.
