The story

Fire Emblem Fates is split into three story paths. Birthright is one of the two base stories, the other being Conquest. The other story path can be bought digitally at a discount through the in-game store. The third story path is Revelation, a DLC that was released later. You need to be have completed Chapter 6 in either game to access the other stories and DLC. Birthright is the easier path as it has the ability to use scouting missions to grind experience and money and simpler mission objectives.

What it’s like

Bright, painterly daylight over castle towns and open green fields, with the 3DS's soft anime-styled character portraits and lush forest tiles giving the whole thing a storybook warmth. Chapter cutscenes play out in gentle dialogue scenes with expressive stills, and the score leans on sweeping orchestral strings and bright brass during battle, easing into quieter, pastoral piano between missions. Turn-based grid tactics move at a patient, unhurried pace: you plan a formation, watch each unit's animation play out, and settle into a rhythm of scouting, base-building and conversations between characters. The mood is warm, earnest and hopeful, with a steady undercurrent of family tension and loyalty rather than dread. Combat is strategic and can be bloody in a stylised, cartoonish way, with swords and magic clashing and defeated enemies vanishing, but there is no gore. The easier mission design and grindable experience make it forgiving for a relaxed session on the couch or a long commute. It suits players who want a comforting, character-rich tactics game with room to breathe and low risk of frustration.
