The story
Fate/Grand Order is a turn-based role-playing game with some visual novel elements set in the Fate/ franchise, for iOS and Android.
What it’s like
Bright anime portraiture against a dim, moody backdrop of ruined historical landscapes, with flat, saturated character art framed inside glowing command-room interfaces and occasional full-screen illustrated scenes that feel like stills from a stylish TV series. The sound is a mix of orchestral swells and driving battle themes, punctuated by voiced dialogue that carries much of the emotional weight, and the whole thing plays out in short, tappable sessions that suit a commute, a lunch break, or a few quiet minutes before bed. Its vibe is earnest, busy and playfully epic, with a steady undercurrent of melancholy that comes from its recurring themes of loss and sacrifice. The pace is brisk and episodic, with long dialogue sequences alternating with turn-based fights, and its rewards and progression stay constantly in view. Its characters are a rotating cast of historical and legendary figures who gradually open up to one another across long story arcs. Combat is stylised and cartoonish, with frequent flashy attacks, some cheerful peril and occasional dramatic deaths, but no gore. It suits players who enjoy collecting characters, anime spectacle and long serialised storytelling, and who don't mind a free-to-play gacha structure.
