The story
Fire Emblem Fates is split into three story paths. Conquest is one of the two base stories, the other being Birthright. The other story path can be bought digitally at a discount through the in-game store. The third story path is Revelation, a DLC that was released later. You need to be have completed Chapter 6 in either game to access the other stories and DLC. Conquest is the hardest of the three paths, having reduced ability to grind experience from maps, tougher mission objectives, and giving less money and experience for those missions.
What it’s like
Hard-edged and grounded, with a stylized anime-influenced art direction: crisp character portraits in bold colour against painted fantasy landscapes, dark stone fortresses, storm-grey skies and moody castle interiors lit by torchlight. The grid-based battle maps are rendered in clean, readable 3D, and the camera drifts gently across them between turns. The score leans on sweeping orchestral strings and martial drums during fights, dropping to soft piano and quiet strings in camp and support scenes. Its vibe is severe and determined, with a melancholy undertow that suits a long evening at the handheld, a stretch of focused planning on a weeknight, or a rainy afternoon when you want something that asks for patience. Pacing is deliberate: each chapter is a tactical puzzle followed by slow, character-driven conversation, and the arc follows a young royal forced to harden her resolve and confront a painful inheritance. Violence is stylized and bloodless, with fallen units simply vanishing from the map, but permadeath keeps losses sharp and the tension can be punishing. Designed for strategy veterans who want a demanding, high-stakes tactical RPG and enjoy investing in a cast over many hours.
