The story

Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees return to terrorize the teenagers of Elm Street. Only this time, they're out to get each other, too.

What it’s like

Saturated, gleaming horror with dreamlike red and orange light, glossy digital sheen and a dark-nighted suburban palette: teenagers' bedrooms bathed in sodium-street glow, dripping sets lit like stage shows, and the woods around Crystal Lake rendered in murky greens and fog. Camera moves are kinetic and comic-book quick, with punchy cuts, rapid-fire jump scares and set pieces staged for showy kills rather than lingering dread. The score is loud and percussive, with stings and driving rock cues that keep the energy high. Violence is frequent, graphic and gory, with bloody slashings, dismemberment and onscreen cruelty played for shock and dark humor; there is also drug use, profanity and sexual innuendo among the teens. The pace is brisk and the tone mocking and self-aware, a crowd-pleasing slasher blend for fans of 1980s-style splatter who want a noisy, irreverent night of carnage with a wink.
