The story
Five years after the horrible bloodbath at Camp Crystal Lake, new counselors roam the area, not sensing the ominous lurking presence that proves that the grisly legend is real.
What it’s like
Dusky summer-camp woods shot in flat, low-contrast daylight that turns to murky green-brown at dusk, with the lake glimpsed through trees and cabins lit by a single bare bulb. The camera drifts through the undergrowth in long point-of-view glides, and the score is a pulsing, sparse synth figure that tightens into stabs when something moves in the brush. The vibe is sweaty, sun-bleached dread: tense and campy at once, with cheap-looking rural textures, bug-spray-and-lake-water atmosphere, and a steady drip of rustic jump scares. Pacing is brisk for long stretches, with counselors wandering off alone and the middle hour spent in quiet anticipation before the violence comes. Intensity is high: frequent stabbings, impalements, and gore with practical effects, plus sudden jolts and a sexual subplot that gets punished. Characters are young, flirtatious, and bluntly drawn, and the arc is mostly survival against a hidden threat. It suits a late-night watch with friends or a Halloween double feature, and fans of 1980s slashers who enjoy gore, jump scares, and nostalgic low-budget atmosphere will get what they came for.
