The story
When their bus is crippled on the side of a deserted road, a team of high school athletes discover an opponent they cannot defeat – and may not survive.
What it’s like
Gritty, sun-drained rural horror: long stretches of dusty back roads, wheat fields and abandoned farmland under hard afternoon sun that slides into thick night, with the blacks and browns crushing down until the headlights become the only light. Camera work is mostly conventional handheld and quick cutting, and the score leans on pounding percussion and brassy stingers that spike the jumps. The vibe is grim, grinding dread, best suited to a late-night watch with the lights off or a Halloween double bill. Pacing is brisk once the bus breaks down, with the middle stretch built on chase and ambush rather than slow build, and the tone is bleak and cynical, with the young cast's bravado wearing away into panic. The arc follows a group of teenagers learning too late that they have crossed something ancient and merciless. Violence is frequent and graphic: stabbings, impalings, bodies left grotesquely arranged, and some gore that lands hard, though it is largely shot straight rather than lingered on. Not gentle at all. For horror fans who want a nasty, mean-spirited creature feature with a folklore streak and a no-escape road setup.
