The story

A teenage boy is haunted in his dreams by deceased child murderer Freddy Krueger, who is out to possess him in order to continue his reign of terror in the real world.

What it’s like

Warm, sweaty suburban nights give way to lurid dream-logic: saturated reds and sickly greens, fire that glows like stage lighting, and a basement-boiler industrial grime that feels gritty rather than polished. The 1985 film is shot in a mid-80s horror style, with punchy synth stings and a pulsing electronic score that keeps tension buzzing even in quiet scenes, and its camera lingers on mirrors, doorways and bedroom corners where something might be waiting. Pacing is brisk and escalating, with long stretches of teen awkwardness and sleepy-house atmosphere punctured by bursts of surreal dream sequences. The emotional register is anxious and campy in turn, a frightened adolescent slowly losing control of his own body and self. Violence is frequent and stylized, with stabbings, burns and gory, cartoonish kills, plus sexual undertones and a sadistic, leering villain; the fear is more lurid than deeply dark. Best for horror fans who enjoy 80s slasher style, midnight-movie excess and a Halloween-season watch with friends.
