The story

Full Throttle is a computer adventure game developed and published by LucasArts. It was designed by Tim Schafer, who would later go on to design Grim Fandango, Psychonauts and Brütal Legend. The game features voice actors Roy Conrad and Mark Hamill. It was released on April 30, 1995. It is the tenth game to use the SCUMM adventure game engine.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached desert highways rendered in painted, hand-drawn art, with sweeping vistas and grimy roadhouse interiors lit by warm amber and dusty neon. The characters are cartoonish and expressive, and the animation is loose and bouncy. The soundtrack leans on snarling electric guitar, twangy roadhouse rock and wry, jazzy stings that cut against the dusty setting. The vibe is scruffy, sardonic and loose, a cheerful kind of grit suited to a lazy afternoon or a long session with headphones on. Pacing is leisurely, with long wandering stretches broken by puzzles that reward patient poking around. The emotional register is wisecracking and ironic, and the story follows a cynical biker who gradually shifts from self-interest toward loyalty and a sense of responsibility. Violence is cartoonish, with brawls, shoves and a few menacing moments, and there is no gore and no sexual content; the darkness is mostly in the crime plot and the gallows humour. It suits players who enjoy classic point-and-click puzzles, sharp dialogue and irreverent, noir-tinged road adventure.
