What it’s like
Rain-slicked grey streets under sodium lamps and overcast skies give the first game a damp, sullen mood, while the second swaps that for hot pastel neon, palm-lined boulevards and sun-bleached beaches. The third stretches into sun-faded suburbs, dusty desert roads and hazy urban sprawl, with a warm, lived-in shabbiness throughout. The soundtracks do much of the work: each car radio pulls in a different station, from 1980s synth-pop and rock to gritty hip-hop and country, so driving around becomes the main pleasure. Camera sits behind the vehicle or character in a fluid third-person view, and the open cities feel alive with traffic and pedestrians. The overall vibe is a restless, nostalgic late-night cruise: wandering, listening and getting into trouble at your own pace. Pacing is loose and episodic, with long stretches of aimless driving broken by sharp bursts of chaos. Its criminal protagonists are hardened and morally compromised, and the arcs follow reluctant loyalty, betrayal and slow survival. Violence is frequent and graphic enough to be cartoonish but still brutal, with shootouts, car crashes and explosions; there is also profanity, drug use, crime and mature sexual content, mainly in the third entry. Not gentle. For adults who want a sprawling sandbox of retro crime, period music and freewheeling driving.
