The story

Burnout: Legends takes the most explosive moments of the popular Burnout series of racing games, mashes them together and adds some new surprises -- giving you the best racing experience to come out for the DS. Use your car as a weapon and battle your way to the front of the pack - by taking out rivals and instigating spectacular crashes. Speed, depth and destruction are waiting for you, in the game of on-the-go automotive anarchy.

What it’s like

Hyper-saturated and kinetic, with motion blur streaking across low-poly city blocks and the camera tight behind the bumper so every near-miss feels physical. Bright daylight, tunnel dusk and sodium-orange night stretches run through sun-glazed boulevards and gritty industrial lanes, the traffic and police cruisers rendered in chunky, glossy polygons that shatter in bursts of sparks. The soundtrack is a loud licensed mix of rock and electronic tracks, punctuated by tyre screeches, crunching metal and the slow-motion hush of bullet time after a big wreck. The vibe is breathless, cheeky arcade mayhem: a rush to hit the high score, rewind the instant replay and do it again. Pacing is relentless, with races built in short bursts that suit a commute, a waiting room or a quick hit before bed. Tone is playful rather than grim, though the crashes are frequent and cartoonishly violent, with exploding cars and police chases but no gore or real harm. It suits players who want loud, fast, mischievous destruction on a handheld and enjoy competitive score-chasing over story.
