The story

WipEout Pure is the first adaptation for the PSP of the long-running Wipeout series. Players take part in a futuristic racing league known as the FX300 Racing League and control a fast hovercrafts on tight, cornering tracks, vying for first place in one of many tournaments. There are ten anti-gravity vehicles available to use (two need to be unlocked), each with their own characteristics in speed, handling and acceleration. Vehicles are further divided into classes that are unlocked gradually. In later classes most of the vehicles become much faster and require more precise steering at fast speeds. In the same vein, players can unlock new tournaments.

What it’s like

Hard-edged neon and chrome: tracks glow in saturated electric blues, magentas and acid greens, with bloom bleeding off the barriers and the light rippling across polished concrete and glass-walled tunnels. The camera hangs low behind each anti-grav craft, so speed reads as a rush of streaked color and heat-haze, and the frame shudders with every boost pad. The soundtrack is a driving electronic and techno mix, pulsing hard beats and bright synth leads that tighten as the classes climb, with only the whoosh of engines and the hiss of thrusters underneath. The vibe is kinetic, bright and slightly cold, a futuristic sport played at full throttle. It suits a commute on a PSP, a short burst before bed, or a late-night session with the bass turned up. Violence is limited to vehicular combat: weapons clip rivals and send ships spinning and exploding in quick, cartoonish bursts, with no gore and no real menace. Pacing is relentless: races are short, lap tension is constant, and the arc is simply a hunt for the next unlocked league. It is for people who love speed, precise cornering, and the satisfaction of mastering a difficult, fast-moving machine.
