The story
Rollcage Stage II is an arcade-style racing game for PlayStation and PC, developed by Attention To Detail, and published by Psygnosis. It is the sequel to Rollcage and was released in 2000. On top of the basic racing concept, the cars can be equipped with weapons, that are picked up on the track as bonuses, which can be used against competing cars. The automobiles themselves, once again, have wheels that are larger than the body of the car thus creating a car that has no 'right way up' and can be flipped and continue to drive.
What it’s like
Fast, saturated and relentlessly kinetic, with the motion blur and streaking light trails of a late-nineties arcade racer. The tracks are sci-fi circuits of glowing neon, chrome and tunnel-like loops, and the cars are built around oversized wheels so they can drive upside down, which turns every crash into a spinning, tumbling spectacle. Pickup weapons flash and detonate in bursts of colour, and the soundtrack is a licensed techno and rock mix pulsing under the engine noise, with the bink video cutscenes adding a glossy, slightly dated sheen. The vibe is high-octane, cheeky and chaotic, best suited to a loud evening session with friends on split screen or a quick run of single-player cups when you want adrenaline rather than calm. Violence is cartoonish: cars explode and wreck, but nothing is gory or cruel. It suits players who love arcade speed, weapon-laden mayhem and the rough charm of early-two-thousands PlayStation and PC racing.
