The story

Experience one of adventure gaming’s most stunning masterpieces all over again in this blockbuster retelling of the award-winning 1993 murder-mystery, which adds all-new puzzles, scenes, and HD graphics! Blending the best of yesterday and today, it re-imagines the 1993 original, voted one of the greatest games of all time, for an entirely new generation of fans. As struggling author and bookstore owner Gabriel Knight, players will investigate a series of savage ritual killings in New Orleans and their connection to voodoo’s sinister mysteries. The deeper you dive into master storyteller Jane Jensen’s tale of terror and suspense, the closer you’ll come to discovering the secrets of Gabriel’s family history–and unfolding his destiny.

What it’s like

Rain-dark New Orleans rendered in painted, hand-drawn backdrops: candlelit parlours, humid courtyards, shadowed voodoo sanctuaries, and the warm amber of a bookstore's lamps against night streets. The 2014 remake keeps the original's painterly, slightly theatrical look while sharpening it into HD, so every frame feels like a finely lit still. Sound leans on a moody, jazz-tinged score, sparse piano, thunder and crickets, and the murmur of drums from somewhere off-screen. The vibe is gothic, atmospheric unease with a bookish, wry undercurrent, best suited to a slow evening with the lights low or a patient late-night session alone. Pacing is deliberate: long stretches of conversation, research, and wandering punctuated by puzzles that reward careful attention. The emotional register is melancholy and suspenseful, following a struggling writer who is pulled reluctantly into his family's past and gradually grows into his inheritance. Violence is present but mostly implied: ritual killings are shown through crime-scene imagery and aftermath rather than gore, with some frightening imagery and an uneasy, creeping dread. Suits players who love old-school point-and-click mysteries, slow-burn Southern Gothic atmosphere, and stories of a reluctant hero finding courage.
