The story
In 1970s India, Sardar Khan vows to take revenge on the man who killed his father decades earlier.
What it’s like
Raw, grimy and kinetic, with dusty coal-town streets, smoke-stained interiors and sweat-drenched midday heat rendered in saturated, sun-bleached colour. The camera hurtles through crowded lanes, cuts sharply to hand-held close-ups and throws in sudden freeze-frames, while the soundtrack loops in a wild mix of folk-tinged rock, ghazal-style songs and pulsing period pop that jolts against the violence. Pacing is brisk and deliberately uneven, with long, talky stretches of family rivalry giving way to abrupt bursts of gunfire and bloodshed; the violence is frequent, bloody and often darkly comic, with some sexual content and crude language throughout. The tone is cynical, swaggering and tragicomic, the kind of gangster epic where ambition, vengeance and the cost of dynastic loyalty are played out with relish. It suits a late-night watch with friends, or anyone who wants a loud, sprawling crime saga with a sardonic edge. Made for people who enjoy genre-bending, operatic crime stories, and not for anyone seeking something gentle.
