The story

God of War: Ragnarök is the ninth installment in the God of War series and the sequel to 2018's God of War. Continuing with the Norse mythology theme, the game is set in ancient Norway and features series protagonists Kratos, the former Greek God of War, and his young son Atreus. The game kicked off the events of Ragnarök, where Kratos and Atreus must journey to each of the Nine Realms in search of answers as they prepare for the prophesied battle that will end the world.

What it’s like

Snowbound mountains, ash-grey fjords and gold-lit autumn forests make up the palette here, rendered in a grounded, painterly realism that lingers on weathered leather, frost on stone and the glow of runic carvings. The camera stays close over Kratos's shoulder for most of the action, so every blow lands with weight, and the long, unbroken shots of sweeping vistas give the travel between realms a contemplative pace. The score swells with brass and taiko during fights and falls back to low strings and wind in quiet camp scenes, where much of the emotional work happens. Its vibe is brooding and elegiac, a sombre road-trip through myth with a warm father-son core. The violence is frequent and intense: heavy melee with visceral, bloody finishers, creature slaughter and some grim deaths, though the gore is stylised rather than gratuitous. Sexual content is absent. Its arcs follow a hardened, guarded man slowly learning to speak to his son, and an apocalypse that feels personal. It suits players who want a cinematic action epic with deep, quiet character moments between the battles.
