The story

The Banner Saga is a Viking-themed tactical role-playing video game.

What it’s like

Hand-painted snowfields and smoky longhouse interiors, drawn in a flat, storybook style with rough inked outlines and muted ochre, slate and blood-red palettes. Frozen plains roll out under heavy grey skies, and the world reads as a slow, cold woodcut, broken up by dramatic painted banners and warm firelight against the dark. The soundtrack is a sweeping, mournful orchestral score built on lute, horns and low strings, with long quiet stretches of wind and crunching snow. Turn-based battles on a grid are heavy and deliberate, each hit landing with weight. Its vibe is bleak, stoic melancholy: a long winter's journey that suits a cold, unhurried evening or a patient, thoughtful session. Pacing is measured, with tense dialogue choices and camp scenes between skirmishes that let relationships and loss build. The register is solemn and elegiac, following a travelling band whose members carry the cost of every decision. Violence is frequent and bloody in battle, with death a constant presence, though it is shown through stylised combat rather than lingering gore. It suits players who love tactical strategy, mythic Norse atmosphere and sorrowful, consequential storytelling.
