What it’s like
Hand-painted 2D art with a flat, woodcut-like texture, set against washed-out snowfields, smoky grey skies and muted ochre tents, so the whole world looks like an old illuminated manuscript left out in the weather. Its battles play out on a grid of painted terrain, with slow, weighty unit animations and sudden flashes of crimson when blows land. Music is a mournful string-and-horn score that swells during marches and thins to near silence in camp, and the sound of wind and creaking wood carries much of the quiet. The vibe is cold, stubborn melancholy with a thread of defiance, best suited to a long evening with the lights low or a patient weekend when you want to think as much as you act. Pacing is deliberate: travel scenes give way to tense turn-based fights, and long dialogue exchanges let the cast's weariness and disagreements breathe. Its people are worn-down survivors whose arcs turn on hard choices about loyalty, sacrifice and who gets left behind. Violence is frequent and bloody in battle, with gore shown in spurts of red and deaths that land heavily, though it stays stylised rather than graphic. It suits players who want a grim, thoughtful tactics game with a strong sense of place and consequence.
