The story

Valkyrie Profile is a role-playing video game developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix (now Square Enix) for the PlayStation. It was released on December 22, 1999 in Japan and on August 29, 2000 in North America. An enhanced port of the game was later released for the PlayStation Portable under the name Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth on March 2, 2006 in Japan, July 18, 2006 in North America, and April 27, 2007 in Europe.

What it’s like

Sprite-based 2D worlds rendered in soft, painterly pastels, with hand-drawn character portraits and dramatic cutscenes that lean on bold colour and sweeping camera moves over the pixel-art battlefields. Mythic Norse landscapes glow in twilight blues and ember oranges, and the score is orchestral and lush, swelling into choral and sung passages that give the whole thing a ceremonial, almost liturgical weight. Its vibe is wistful and austere, a melancholy grandeur that suits a long evening with headphones or a patient session stretched across a quiet weekend. Pacing is deliberate: the overworld invites wandering and backtracking, combat is turn-based with stylised spectacle, and the rhythm alternates between grinding for strength and quiet story beats about fate and sacrifice. Its emotional register is solemn and elegiac, following a warrior who gathers the souls of the dead for a looming war and slowly confronts what that duty costs. Violence is present through fantasy battles and deaths, stylised rather than gory, with a dark, mournful undertone and occasional brief, sharp cruelty. It is for players who want melancholic myth, atmosphere over action, and the satisfaction of patient, character-driven progression.
