The story
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria is the second installment of the Valkyrie Profile series. Taking place hundreds of years before the original game, the story revolves around two characters living the same body, named Silmeria and Alicia. Together, the two characters work to stop a catastrophe that could cause war between the people and the gods. The game received generally positive reviews, citing its similarity to the original Valkyrie Profile game and its beautiful graphics, but had a convoluted interface and a high degree of difficulty. The game went on to be re-released as a Square Enix "Ultimate Release".
What it’s like
Hand-drawn 2D character sprites sit over painted backdrops of ruined halls, misty forests and sunlit sky-cities, all rendered in a soft, slightly storybook palette of pale golds, deep blues and muted greens. The 3D battle arenas are wide and bright, with spell effects that bloom in warm washes of colour, and the cutscenes lean on static illustrated frames and slow fades. Sound is built on orchestral Norse-flavoured themes, with choral swells and wind-blown strings giving way to quiet piano in the emptier moments. The vibe is melancholy and mythic, with a steady undertow of grief and resolve. It suits long evenings with a controller, sessions stretched over a weekend, or quiet hours alone with the world's details. Pacing is deliberate: exploration and dialogue alternate with dense, tactical battles that demand attention and patience, and the interface can feel fiddly until its rhythms settle. The emotional register is elegiac, following two souls sharing one body as they carry a burden neither can set down alone. Violence is stylised and fantastical, with sword and magic clashes that are frequent but bloodless and never graphic, and the tone stays more sorrowful than frightening. It is for players who enjoy mythology-soaked fantasy, demanding turn-based combat, and stories that reward slow, committed attention.
