The story
Suikoden II is a role-playing game developed and published by Konami for the PlayStation. Set in a world of warring nations, the game follows a silent protagonist caught between the Kingdom of Highland and the City-States of Jowston. Gameplay combines turn-based party combat, one-on-one duels, and grid-based strategic army battles. Players can recruit over 100 characters, many of whom join the party or contribute to a home base that expands throughout the game. Save data from the original Suikoden can be imported to carry over certain characters and story details.
What it’s like
Flat, pre-rendered-looking backdrops of castles, forests and harbour towns sit beneath blocky polygonal sprites, giving the whole game the warm, slightly storybook quality of a 1998 PlayStation RPG painted in muted greens, ochres and deep blues. Battles shift into a grid of tiny soldiers, and the sound is a rolling, wistful orchestral score with bright fanfares that give way to near-silence when the camera pulls back over a dark, rain-swept road. Vibe: earnest, melancholy, quietly hopeful, with a steady rhythm of town visits, recruiting, and the long slow build of a home base filling with people. The mood suits a rainy weekend, a long stretch of evenings with a controller, or a comfort replay. Violence is frequent and stylised: swordfights, war-camp massacres and sudden deaths of named allies, with some grim, emotionally heavy scenes in the second act, but no gore and little sexual content. Its arcs follow loyalty tested by betrayal and a reluctant leader learning to trust the people who gather around him. Made for players who love tactical strategy, large casts of recruitable characters, and sad, sincere stories about friendship under pressure.
