The story

Vandal Hearts II is a tactical role-playing game for the PlayStation and the sequel to Vandal Hearts.

What it’s like

Chunky polygonal soldiers stand on isometric battle grids painted over pre-rendered, storybook-flat backdrops, with the palette shifting from warm daylit greens and browns to cool blue nights as the day-night cycle turns. Movement is deliberate and square-by-square, and the scene pauses for each turn, so the pace is patient and rhythmic rather than frantic. The score is a late-'90s orchestral-leaning mix that swells over battle setups and settles into quieter themes between skirmishes. Combat is stylised melee with clean, bloodless animations and a steady sprinkling of war-story death; it's tense in strategy but not graphic. The tone is earnest, a little melodramatic, and steadily focused on a male protagonist and his changing party. It suits a slow evening with a controller, a weekend of rebuilding a team, or a comfort replay with multiple endings to chase. It's for players who enjoy methodical tactics, grid puzzles, and retro fantasy atmosphere more than cinematic spectacle.
