The story

Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is a Strategy video game published by Blizzard Entertainment released on 1995 for MS-DOS. Warcraft 2 is a successor of the popular Warcraft real-time strategy game. The game contains many improvements over the previous version in graphics, sounds and playability. The Multiplayer was also greatly improved allowing up to 8 players in the marvelous multiplayer skirmish.

What it’s like

Chunky, hand-painted fantasy sprites sit on a top-down isometric map of green meadows, dark forests and grey stone, with bright banners and warm, saturated colour that makes even a burning village look cheerful. The camera is fixed above the action and you pan across the fog of war, watching peasants bob between gold mines and lumber camps while tiny footsoldiers clash in puffs of pixel dust. The soundscape is a steady martial score of drums and brass, punctuated by gruff unit barks, the clank of axes, the bleat of sheep and crisp "work complete" chimes. Pacing is brisk and absorbing, a constant cycle of building, gathering and skirmishing where each session can stretch into a long evening at the desk. Its emotional register is light and competitive rather than grim: the violence is cartoonish, with units collapsing into skeletal remains and blood barely more than a flash of red, so it suits players who want tactical tension without dread. Vibe: bustling, good-humoured and strategic, a warm sword-and-sorcery wargame for anyone who enjoys planning, micromanaging and out-thinking an opponent on a rainy afternoon or a late-night session with friends.
