The story

The Spider of Lanka begins in 1741, one year before the first scenario in The Case of the Golden Idol, and uncovers the awful origins of this five-decade tale of betrayal, greed, ambition and death. Set in the fictional Kingdom of Lanka, this DLC offers three brand new scenarios that will demand the utmost of your deduction powers to unravel.

What it’s like

Cold candlelit interiors and sun-baked stone courtyards in an invented 18th-century kingdom, rendered in flat, painterly hand-drawn art with clean ink outlines and warm ochre and deep indigo palettes. The mood is quiet, studious unease: long stretches of reading, cross-referencing and sliding documents across a desk, punctuated by a soft chime or a low, sparse string motif when a clue clicks into place. Its pacing is unhurried and cerebral, with no timers and room to linger, so the rhythm is set by your own reasoning rather than by any action. The tone is wry and melancholy beneath its puzzles, with a small cast of morally compromised figures whose arcs turn on suspicion, old loyalties and slow revelations of greed. Violence is off-page and implied: a few grim crime-scene descriptions and illustrated bodies, with death handled as a fact to solve rather than something shown in gore, and no sexual content. Best suited to a late evening alone, a patient rainy afternoon, or anyone who loves working out a mystery through notes and deduction. It is for players who want a thoughtful, low-gore detective puzzler with a historical, mythic flavour.
