The story

In the heat of the summer lays a lonesome house in the countryside where nine year old twin brothers await their mother’s return. When she comes home, bandaged after cosmetic surgery, nothing is like before and the children start to doubt whether this woman is actually who she says she is.

What it’s like

Stark, sun-bleached Austrian countryside under a merciless summer sky, with wide static shots of a lonely house, sparse pine forest and a still lake that feel as much like a trap as a holiday. The palette runs to sickly whites, dusty ochres and deep shadow inside the rooms, and the camera holds on unsettling tableaux for long beats: a bandaged face framed in a doorway, a cat's watchful stare, a figure standing motionless against the bright glare outside. The sound design is mostly natural and oppressive, with cicadas, wind, creaking floorboards and long stretches of near silence broken by a low, sudden score. Vibe: cold dread, claustrophobic unease, the sense that ordinary domestic life has turned strange. This is slow-burn horror that builds through atmosphere and withheld information rather than jump scares, and it suits a late night alone or a dark, quiet evening when you want to be made uneasy. Intensity is high: it has graphic, disturbing violence and cruelty, including torture and an arson scene, along with frightening psychological menace, so it is not suitable for anyone seeking something gentle. Best for viewers who enjoy austere, unnerving psychological horror and can sit with discomfort.
