The story

Gran Turismo 5 is the fifth game in the Gran Turismo racing video game series. It expands on the game's Prologue version and is the first entry of the series to be developed for PlayStation 3. The game marks the first entry in the series with online races with support for up to 16 players. Over 1,000 cars, 26 different locations, and 71 different tracks are available in the game. Night racing also returns. World Rally Championship, NASCAR and Super GT licenses are utilized for the first time in the Gran Turismo series.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached and glossy, with rain-slick asphalt catching showroom reflections and dusk settling over circuits in a warm orange wash. The cars are rendered with obsessive detail: paint that looks wet, sharp sheen on chrome, dust kicking up on gravel rally stages, and night races where headlights smear across tarmac. Camera work leans on the replay cam and the hood-level chase view, with cockpit views for focus. The soundscape is engine-forward: revs climbing through each gear, tyres chirping on hairpins, and a menu soundtrack of electronic and rock tracks that loops quietly while you tune setups. Pacing is methodical and patient, built around licence tests, car collecting, and steady career climbs rather than spectacle, so the mood is calm concentration with flashes of adrenaline. Intensity is low: crashes are mechanical and there is no violence, gore or fear, only the tension of a close lap. Best for quiet evenings, slow tinkering sessions, and anyone who finds rhythm in precision driving, car culture, and the satisfaction of shaving a tenth off a time.
