The story
Grand Prix 3 (GP3) is a computer racing simulator by MicroProse. Released in 2000 by Hasbro Interactive featuring the 1998 Formula One season (with all drivers except Jacques Villeneuve, who is instead replaced by a fictional character, John Newhouse). The game wasn't quite as well received as its predecessors, but at the time was widely considered to be the best racing simulation available. An add-on to the game, called GP3-2000 or GP32k, was released by Hasbro which updated the game to the 2000 Formula One season. A few other changes were made as well including: updated damage physics including damage from on-circuit debris, improved AI, a new replay system, and EAX 3D-sound. Since the release of Grand Prix 4, the GP3 modding scene has slowly declined, and with the cracking of track editing for GP4 many track modders left GP3 for the newer title.
What it’s like
Hard, technical daylight and the hum of engines: a sim built around realistic handling, with polygonal cars rendered in sharp, saturated liveries against the flat grey of the Grand Prix circuits. Its sound is the real star, with engine notes that rise and fall through every gear change and, in the later add-on, positional EAX 3D audio that pulls the field across your speakers as cars pass. The menus and timing screens have a utilitarian, late-nineties clarity, and the replays feel like watching broadcast footage, measured and unhurried. Vibe-wise it reads as focused and earnest, a patient, tactile concentration rather than spectacle. Crashes and debris carry real weight, with damage that lingers across a race, but the intensity is competitive tension rather than gore or cruelty. It suits a quiet weekend afternoon, a long session of practice laps, or the slow-burn satisfaction of mastering a difficult car. It is built for motorsport enthusiasts and simulation purists who value authenticity, setup tuning and lap-by-lap precision over flashy presentation or casual pick-up-and-play ease.
