The story

Growlanser Generations marks the first time this Turn-Based Strategy RPG series made it to the States. Growlanser Generations is a compilation of 2 games from the series, Growlanser II: The Sense of Justice and Growlanser III: The Dual Darkness. Growlanser Generations can give RPG fans over 60 hours of gameplay between the two games as well as multiple endings so pure RPG fans can play through a few different ways to try to see them all. In combat, the player controls each party member by giving them orders in the beginning of each turn. Each game also includes an auto-battle feature which will let the computer fight your battles for you.

What it’s like

Clean anime-style character portraits sit over hand-drawn fantasy battlefields, with bright grid tiles, glowing spell effects, and the crisp pop of bowstrings and sword clashes that feel bounded and tidy. Days are spent crossing sunlit maps and walking through towns and dim dungeons, and the soundtrack is a warm, earnest fantasy score that rises during battles and settles back into quiet melody between them. The pace is deliberate: long stretches of conversation and exploration give way to tactical turns where you weigh positioning, magic, and whether to hand a party member over to auto-battle. Emotionally it runs earnest and hopeful, with a loose, ensemble arc of young people caught up in larger conflicts and making choices that shift how their story ends. Violence is fantasy combat with blood kept minimal and no gore emphasis, and the story touches on war and loss without lingering on cruelty. It suits long, unhurried evenings, weekend marathons, and players who want a sprawling, choice-driven adventure with a comfortable, old-school rhythm, especially fans of tactics RPGs who enjoy building a party and seeing several endings.
