The story
Guacamelee! STCE is an enhanced version of Guacamelee! Gold Edition that adds in two huge new levels, an explosive new ‘Intenso’ power mode, 4-player local co-op support and more. You’ll need to use every bit of your skill and power to defeat STCE’s new challenges (including a scheming new boss- El Trio de la Muerte), in addition to everything the original game's sprawling world has to throw at you.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated Mexican folk-art colour throughout: papel picado banners, painted sugar-skull motifs, and the hand-drawn 2D sprites of luchadores and skeletons popping against dark, cavernous backdrops with sudden flashes of gold. The art is crisp and cartoonish, with bold outlines and exaggerated, squash-and-stretch animation that makes every punch and uppercut feel physical. The soundscape leans on jaunty mariachi-inflected guitar and percussion, with stings and cheers that punctuate each combo. In the hands it is responsive and fast: a sequence of strikes, throws and wall-jumps through a sprawling, interconnected map that you reopen with new abilities, so the pace shifts between brisk brawling and quieter backtracking through familiar rooms. The mood is buoyant and irreverent, a wry, self-aware comedy with a warm, low-stakes tone. Violence is cartoonish; enemies burst into confetti-like puffs and there is no gore or sexual content, though fights are frequent and the difficulty climbs toward the end. It suits a lively weekend session, a couch co-op night with up to four players, or a playful solo run for people who love combo-driven brawling, Metroidvania exploration, and a sense of humour.
