The story

Get ready for some head-to-head punching action! Little Mac is back and ready to step into the ring once more! Our favorite underdog from the 1980s joins the best of the original Punch-Out!! fighters, including Glass Joe, King Hippo, Von Kaiser, and more. These boxers come to life in cel-shaded 2-D, complete with hilarious fighting animations and backstories that capture all the fun and flair of the original Punch-Out!! games. Hook, jab, swing, then flawlessly execute a Star Punch to take down your opponent. Train with Doc to prepare for the next match, then get back into the ring to face your next challenger. Some defeated opponents may return for a rematch, but come out victorious and you'll be one step closer to winning the Championship Belt!

What it’s like

Bright, saturated cel-shading gives every fighter a bold outline and a cartoon wobble, and the ring glows under stadium lights with a cheerful, sun-warmed palette. The camera sits close to the action, and the animations are exaggerated and funny, from a flexing giant's wind-up to a rival's rubbery collapse onto the canvas. Music is upbeat chiptune-flavoured brass and percussion that quickens as a round tightens, with a countdown clock adding a steady ticking pulse. Matches are short, punchy bursts of timing and dodging, followed by quiet breathers in the training room with a gruff coach. The mood is light, playful and goofy, with an underdog-climbing-the-ranks warmth. Violence is cartoonish knockdowns and stars circling heads, with no gore and nothing graphic, though the opponents are broad, exaggerated caricatures that some players will find dated. It suits a relaxed evening, a bout of loose fun on the couch, or a session with a friend in split-screen. It is for players who want arcade-style reflex play, comic timing and a cheerful, low-stakes sporting romp.
